Wine Trail History

The wineries of the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace appellation have grown from humble beginnings of a small vineyard at Ingleside Plantation planted 35 years ago to the hundreds of acres now found in the region.  Our climate is moderated by the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers.  When we realized our Bordeaux-like climate would allow us to grow exceptional wine grapes the production of high quality wines followed.

Since the creation of "farm wineries" by the 1980 Virginia Farm Winery Act, the industry has flourished over many parts of Virginia.  The timing is right.   The Northern Neck offers rich agricultural assets and when you combine the historic and water-related attractions it makes an agri-tourism opportunity like enjoying fine wine seem perfect.  Wine lovers can also enjoy fishing, boating and sightseeing while they visit the many historic attractions. The Northern Neck was the birthplace of three American presidents.  Within a two hour drive for residents of Virginia Beach and Washington D.C., the Northern Neck is a wonderful weekend getaway to quiet country life.

The wineries vary from the largest, producing over twelve thousand cases to smaller operations of several thousand cases. Ingleside Vineyards staked their claim to the wine industry when there were only six in the state.  Today there are over a hundred wineries in Virginia and the Northern Neck has six wineries currently open.  They all have vineyards on site and many manage vineyards nearby. Production needs have grown rapidly as the popularity of Northern Neck wine has increased. What a beautiful sight to see vineyards climbing over the crest of the next hill.

All of the wineries and their Tasting Rooms are open to the public and you will find the hours of operation listed on our home page.  Visit our B&B Planner to help plan your trip.  Enjoy breathtaking views, sample award-winning wines, and meet the people who are producing world-class wines in Chesapeake Bay Country.
